What software do I need to set up and run my web site?

To get started no software is required to be purchased, all can be obtained free of charge on the Internet, you can always upgrade at a later stage.

For FTP access you can use the cPanel supplied File Manger. This I use for small tasks but prefer the FileZilla free software.

Another option I like to use is the FireFTP addons to FireFox browser, but then you need to be using FireFox (recommended)
or need to install it.

Another great find is the free software for html & css editing called Nvu, this can be downloaded from this site or the Nvu site.

I have found this site showing 40 open source graphic packages worth looking into to see what suites your needs.

Let me know should you have some info on other great tested packages to share.
